I’m a new homeowner and love entertaining in my little house that’s all my own. The only problem? The mess that’s left behind, which is all my own responsibility too. Spending time with friends in the space that I laboriously decorated is a delight, but waking up in the morning to a sticky coffee table, crunched-up chips ground into the carpet, and empty cups everywhere is almost enough to swear off ever throwing another party again.
But, through trial and error, I’ve learned a lot. Cleaning your entire apartment in under an hour is possible. And it’s time for me to share my learnings with you. Read on for my tips on cleaning your bathroom, kitchen, and living room in fifteen minutes each.
JUMP TO: The Bathroom | The Kitchen | The Living Room
Give any bathroom rugs a quick once over with your vacuum before moving them out of the way, as well as removing the soaps and bottles from the shower, and any knickknacks hanging out on counters or window sills. Then, gather the other supplies you’ll need: tub and tile deep cleaners, an all-surface spray, a couple of microfiber cloths, and a toilet bowl cleaner and a brush.
Apply Deep Cleaners
Spray the tub and tile deep cleaners on all surfaces of your bath and shower (or a vinegar and baking soda paste if you want to go the DIY route) and let it sit.
Tackle the Toilet
While those are soaking, swirl some toilet bowl cleaner around the toilet and give it a scrub. Flush and voila — toilet cleaning complete.
Pop the Dyson Cyclone V10™ vacuum into hand-held mode and glide it over any surface that needs cleaning. In 60 seconds or less, you’re done.
Spritz some all-purpose cleaner on all of the bathroom’s surfaces from the sink to the mirror and follow it up with a microfiber cloth for a streak-free finish.
Finish the Tub and Shower
The deep-cleaning agents will have done their job by now, so all you have to do is wipe them up, turn the shower on hot, and rinse everything down.
Vacuum the Floors
All of the innovations in the Dyson Cyclone V10™ vacuum from its full-size bin to its ultra-hygienic dirt ejection, make this segment one of the fastest of the entire project. Just select the setting for tile and glide it over your floors, and you’ll be done before you know it.
Put Everything Back in its Place
Put all of the soaps and shampoos back into the tub, and replace everything else you’ve moved in the process, including rugs and anything decorative. You’re done!
Start with Proper Prep
Scoop rugs off the floor, declutter countertops, and put anything that doesn’t actually belong in the kitchen (a pile of old newspapers, anyone?) back into its proper place.
Then, gather all of the cleaning supplies you’ll need: countertop sprays and disinfectants, a couple of microfiber towels, and a vacuum. The Dyson Cyclone V10™ vacuum is the perfect tool for this task. Even better — you won’t need to make sure there’s a power outlet nearby at all times. It’s cordless, which means it can go anywhere.
Set Up a Soapy Sink
Crank the hot water, squirt in some dish soap, and drop in any dirty dishes or anything else that might need soaking.
Move on to the Fridge
Toss out anything that’s gone bad and give the inside a once-over with some surface spray and a microfiber cloth.
Dust From Top to Bottom
Start up high (like the tops of cabinets), then work your way down through upper cabinet doors, countertops, and lower cabinet floors.
With traditional dusting devices, you’ll end up with a trail of crumbs and dust following you to the floor, but the Dyson Cyclone V10™ vacuum’s superior suction eliminates all of that nonsense. It easily transforms into a handheld device and can get into spaces in a way that other vacuums simply can’t.
Tackle the Dishes
Every dish should be properly soaked by now, so you can quickly and easily scrub everything down or rinse it off and load the dishwasher. Drain the sink, and you’re done.
Clean and Disinfect Surfaces
Spritz an all-surface spray over everything, and wipe it sparkly clean with a microfiber cloth for the best finish.
Vacuum the Floor
It’s time to bring the vacuum back. Not only does the Dyson’s ergonomic design make it easy to use, but its HEPA filtration system actually cleans the air as you use it, leaving both your floors and the air cleaner than they’ve ever been.
Organize the Mess
One of the final steps is to take the time to put everything back in its place. If you’ve got a rug, give it a quick vacuum as well.
Take Out the Trash
Hoist the bag out of the bin, tug the drawstrings closed, and toss it. That’s it!
Put on Some Tunes
Whether you’re into podcasts, audiobooks, or music, listening to something entertaining is essential to making the whole process much more enjoyable.
Now that you’ve got the entertainment sorted, the next step is gathering everything you’ll need before diving in. You’ll want to have a vacuum, glass and surface cleaners, a couple of microfiber cloths, and a bin for recycling or trash.
Round up the Trash
Throw anything unwanted into the recycling bin.
Clean the Clutter
Take any old glasses or dishes that have been lying around and toss ‘em in the sink or dishwasher where they belong. Gather any stacks of coffee table books, knick knacks, or other decorations from surfaces like coffee tables and shelves, and set everything on the couch for now.
Dust It All
From the ceiling fans and light fixtures (including lamps!), to artwork and bookshelves, the old method used to be dusting from top to bottom so that any stray dust floated downward. With a stick vacuum that converts into a handheld device at the press of a button, you don’t have to worry about working in such a systematic way — just suck up the dust in whatever order you feel like. A bonus of the Dyson Cyclone V10™ vacuum is that it has incredible suction power, so you don’t have to waste time going over things twice.
So Fresh and So Clean, Clean
Go over any mirrors or picture frames you have with glass cleaner and the remaining cloth.
Put Everything Back in its Place
Take everything off the couch and place them back where they belong, on their freshly-cleaned surfaces.
Tackle the Furniture
Now that the couch is free again, it’s time to give it — and any other furniture you have — the once-over with your vacuum. If you’re using a stick vacuum, you can just zoom along with the device still in handheld mode.
Finish With the Floor
If you’ve got a rug or two in your living room, pop your vacuum back into floor mode and vacuum them first (a speedy task with the Dyson’s bristle head designed to get deep into fabrics). Once they’re clean, fold them up and push them aside. Now that your floor is uncovered, glide the vacuum over it to complete your final cleaning step, and put the rugs back in place when you’re done.
Add Some Final Touches
Pop an air freshener into the wall or spritz some room freshener around for a fancy final touch. Now sit back and relax.
